Electric Main Panel Upgrade Rebate upto $4,200

To receive the maximum $4,200 rebate for a main panel upgrade through Southern California Edison's (SCE) Charge Ready Home Program, you must meet specific technical, financial, and procedural conditions.

Here are the requirements to qualify for the full $4,200:

1. Financial & Eligibility Conditions (The $4,200 Cap)

To get the maximum $4,200 tier (the Income-Qualified Rebate), you must be an active SCE residential customer living in a single-family home and meet one of the following requirements:

  • Income Cap: Your total household income must be under 80% of the Area Median Income (AMI) for your county.
  • Public Assistance: You are currently enrolled in an approved public assistance program, such as CalFresh/SNAP, Medi-Cal, SSI, LIHEAP, or WIC.
(Note: If you only qualify based on geography—living in a designated disadvantaged community without meeting the low-income tier—the rebate is capped at $2,100 instead

2. Technical Requirements

  • Existing Panel Capacity: Your current main electrical panel must be rated under 200 amps.
  • Upgrade Target: The panel must be upgraded to 200 amps or higher.
  • EV Infrastructure: You must install a dedicated 240-volt circuit/outlet for a Level 2 EV charger.
  • Property Type: The program applies to single-family residences, townhomes, or duplexes with an independent electrical panel and an unshared meter. Tenants/renters may apply but require written approval from the property owner.

3. Execution & Installation Rules

  • Hire a Licensed Contractor: The work must be performed by a licensed professional holding an active CSLB C-10 (Electrical) or General B license.
  • Permits and Inspections: You must secure a city/local building permit and successfully pass the final city inspection.
  • EV Charger Installation Timeline: You are required to install a Level 2 EV charger within 180 days of the panel upgrade. However, owning an electric vehicle at the exact time of application is not strictly required.

4. Application Timeline

  • You must complete the pre-qualification application before or during the project, or apply up to six months (180 days) post-completion for retroactive approval. [1]

You can check the specific income limits for your county or begin the application process directly on the official SCE Charge Ready Home Eligibility Portal.

EV outlet-only installation Rebate upto $1,000

Under the same Southern California Edison (SCE) Charge Ready Home Program, the up-to-$1,000 rebate applies strictly to an EV outlet-only installation.

This rebate is designed for homes that already have enough electrical capacity and do not need a full panel upgrade.

Here are the conditions to receive the $1,000 rebate explained in English:

1. Technical Requirements (The Existing Panel Rule)

  • Existing Panel Capacity: Your current main electrical panel must already be rated at 200 amps or more.
  • Scope of Work: Because your panel is already large enough, the rebate covers the costs to install a dedicated 240-volt circuit and EV outlet (such as a NEMA 14-50 outlet) from your panel to your charging location.

2. Financial & Eligibility Conditions

Just like the panel upgrade, you must be an active SCE residential customer living in an eligible home and meet one of these criteria:

  • Income-Qualified: Your total household income is under 80% of your county's Area Median Income (AMI).
  • Public Assistance: You participate in public assistance programs like CalFresh, Medi-Cal, SSI, WIC, or LIHEAP.
  • Geographic Eligibility: You live in a state-designated disadvantaged community (defined as the top 25% highest-burdened census tracts on the CalEnviroScreen 4.0 map).

3. Installation & Compliance Rules

  • Licensed Electrician: You must hire a professional contractor with an active CSLB C-10 (Electrical) or General B license to install the dedicated circuit and outlet.
  • Permits: The contractor must pull a local city/county building permit and complete the work up to code.
  • Inspection: The project must successfully pass the final city building inspection.

4. Timeline

  • EV Ownership: Owning an EV at the exact moment of application is not required.
  • Filing Deadline: You must submit your rebate application either while the project is active or within 180 days (6 months) after the work passes final inspection.

Note: If you were actually referring to buying an electric car rather than installing the outlet, SCE also offers a completely separate SCE Pre-Owned EV Rebate Program which provides a Standard $1,000 rebate simply for purchasing or leasing an eligible used electric vehicle.

You can verify your specific property eligibility or submit your contractor's invoice on the official SCE Charge Ready Home Portal.
